My principal asked me to participate in an on-line book study for the book “Don’t Bother Me Mom – I’m Learning”. The book is about how video games can teach children. Mr. Prensky’s position is that children are learning positive things from video games. In the first chapter he doesn’t list the positive effects.
He does point out that kids “who can’t concentrate” at school, can play these games for hours on end. He also points out that the people condemning the games do not play them do not understand them. Of course kids playing video games, having friends, doing well aren’t things that are going to make the national news. When two disturbed boys, with a history of trouble with the law, attack their school, the fact they played 1st person shooters makes the news.
Of course the words “digital immigrant” and “digital native” have already been used. I maintain I am a digital native – I just was forced to live in exile for many years.
