Well our 5th grade classes got up to 27 – 29 kids. With inclusion instead of pull outs for special ed students, this was very difficult. Parents were actually complaining. We are getting a new 5th grade teacher from an neighboring school that was over staffed.
One of the 5th grade teachers and I were talking and she mentioned that her parents were surprised about how color blind our students are. 5th grade teacher has a child in 6th grade this year. When she had a sleep over the small group was representative of our school. With the exception of our bilingual classes, the kids don’t seem to pair off into racial groups. I wonder if it is because they have grown up together, or maybe because so many of our kids are multiracial in their background.
