Teaching since Fall 2001 – 3rd year in 2nd grade

I read this story today. I couldn’t believe this – quote “`It’s not censoring; it’s protecting our children from lies.” Taking a book is not only censoring other children – but it is also theft. If she disagrees with the text, she is free to tell her child to not read the book. She could even buy other books that she thinks have a more accurate information. When I was in elementary school, my mother became very unhappy with the selection of books. She felt there were to many “See Jane Run” books, and not enough interesting picture books. She started a book fund raiser, and advocated for more funding. She did remove books from the shelves. With the library she collected worn out books from the shelves – and dumped them on a table at a PTA meeting to make a point. She did not resort to theft.MiamiHerald.com | 02/22/2007 | Cuban mom raids school library
